Apartment Hunt: A Rollercoaster Experience
Continuing the story about the apartment
Last week, we finally received a response from the agent — all our pets are welcome, and the landlord allows any renovations!
It seemed like a cause for celebration. However, an unexpected twist came when the landlord and I couldn't agree on the timeline. We needed to notify our current landlord two months before moving out, while the new landlord wanted us to move in within a month.
Technically, we could find tenants for our current apartment ourselves and move out earlier. But that comes with a certain risk; we didn't want to end up in a situation where we had to pay rent for both places for a whole month.
Unfortunately, we couldn’t reach a compromise. I can’t say I was head over heels in love with this new apartment, so my husband and I calmly informed the realtor that we would have to pass on the offer under these circumstances.
I must admit, I was incredibly frustrated by the inflexibility. You’ve been unable to rent this apartment for a month already! I saved it as a favorite to keep an eye on how they struggle and lower the price.
Meanwhile, we decided to notify our current landlord that we would be moving out in two months. This way, our timeline would shorten, making it easier to find another apartment.
Guess who crawled back to me on Monday? The landlord was willing to negotiate; how about we move in by March 20th?
I said, okay, let’s consider this option. However, we were still concerned about the room with the peeling plaster. Hello, mold! Will they fix the wall? The response was disheartening: “Someone will come to take a look this week.”
Well, let me know what they decide!
Then, there was a day of silence, and my husband and I decided we definitely wouldn’t be renting that apartment. Today, I wrote to the realtor, thanking them for their time but ultimately declining the offer. Just like that, the drama ended: “Oh, we already found other tenants, all good!”
Come on, take it easy and be upfront. I was the first to say this wasn’t going to work out.
