Celebrating Guy Fawkes Day with Fireworks
Guy Fawkes Day
Yesterday, the UK celebrated a significant occasion—Guy Fawkes Day. This day commemorates the failed attempt to assassinate King James I in 1605. A Catholic nobleman, Guy Fawkes, and his accomplices plotted to blow up the Houses of Parliament, but they were caught before they could carry out their plan!
As soon as darkness fell, fireworks lit up the sky and continued until midnight. It reminded me of the spectacular displays we often see in Russia during New Year’s celebrations.
I went up to the 15th floor of our building and met my British neighbor there. I asked him what people usually do to celebrate this day. He replied, "We drink and watch the fireworks." I totally understand!
Interestingly, the name Guy Fawkes has contributed to the modern term "guy." The evolution goes like this: Guy Fawkes → the effigy of Fawkes that we burn → "guy," which refers to a poorly dressed person → and now "guy/guys," which means a young man or people in general.
