Kitchen Innovations and Modern Living
Kitchen Revolution
Yesterday, our dryer broke! Thankfully, in our building, issues like this are resolved quite easily. You just fill out a request for a technician, and he either repairs the machine or replaces it with a new one.
Isn't it funny that just this week I watched a show about the kitchen revolution in Britain during the 1950s? In just one decade, people's lives transformed with the introduction of modern kitchens, mixers, electric kettles, washing machines, and refrigerators—though, of course, this was primarily for the wealthy. To give you an idea, a refrigerator in the '50s would cost the equivalent of £12,000 today.
The show is so well done! The host first shows how people lived in the 1940s and then "experiences" each new invention. He shares delightful moments with adorable grandmothers who vividly remember life without refrigerators and washing machines!
The highlight of the program features a gecko that was invited to test a non-stick frying pan. It can climb up vertical surfaces, even glass, but started slipping on the Teflon coating!
Now, we have wet laundry hanging all over our apartment, and I can’t help but think that in the '40s, such chaos would have been unimaginable. I watched the show without headphones, and now I’m a bit worried that my kitchen might have been eavesdropping and decided to show me who’s really in charge!
