Tennis Fashion Highlights at Grand Slams
I’m so happy to have completed my portfolio, especially since the Australian Open is in full swing! 🎾
I've been wanting to discuss tennis outfits at Grand Slam tournaments. Lately, it seems like there haven't been many standout looks, which is a bit disappointing.
My absolute favorite has to be Naomi Osaka from Japan. Just look at her!
She debuted in the first round of the Australian Open wearing pleated maxi pants, a charming hat with a veil, and holding an umbrella. Later, she changed into a simple yet stunning green dress. Although it looks quite minimalist, those flowing details added such an elegant touch! You can get the dress from American Nike for $186.
This look, titled "Jellyfish," was designed by London fashion designer Robert Wun, who has previously worked with the likes of Beyoncé, Cardi B, and Ariana Grande.
The umbrella and hat are adorned with a butterfly, which serves as a sweet reminder of that memorable moment in 2021 when a butterfly landed on Naomi's nose during a match at the same Australian Open. She even won that tournament!
While the price and shipping from the States can be a downside, what really bothers me is that these dresses don't come with an inner bra. So one must find or buy a top that fits just right and matches in color. But this dress looks so perfect with my green racket!
Unfortunately, the hat and umbrella aren’t available for purchase. I can already imagine the surprised expressions on my 60-year-old tennis friends' faces if I showed up on the court wearing that! I once joked with a friend that his tennis bag is five years older than I am.
Last year, Osaka had a fantastic collaboration with Labubua at the US Open; in every post-match interview, she unveiled a new Labubua piece, each one referencing famous tennis players. She often surprises us with her outfits—remember that enormous tail she removed before a match at the US Open?
Despite the criticism she receives for her choices, it’s hard for her not to face backlash if she loses in such a standout outfit. People quickly take to social media to suggest she should focus more on tennis.
And when it comes to comfort, that’s a topic for endless debate. All this style seems just for show; she plays in more basic gear. For instance, during this Australian Open, we saw Iga Swiatek tearing her ordinary tennis skirt from ON during a break because it was uncomfortable.
