Unexpected Kindness from a Neighbor

About My Neighbor

Once again, our garbage chute is out of order, so I have to make a trip down to the B floor to toss out the trash myself.

As I step into the elevator, I bump into a young neighbor who is also carrying a bag of garbage. I think I’ve seen her once at a building event, but she probably doesn’t remember me; we haven’t seen each other in a while, and I have a new haircut.

I can't even recall if we exchanged greetings when I entered the elevator. There was no small talk between us, and I stood quietly behind her. We rode in silence. I looked quite casual, just in my home attire, only out to throw away the rubbish, while she appeared put together, clearly on her way somewhere.

Suddenly, she turned to me and asked, "Are you throwing away garbage? Let me take yours."

I was taken aback. It's worth noting that my trash was stuffed into a large craft bag from Amazon with no handles, which I was awkwardly pressing against my chest. In contrast, she had a neat little black bag with two handles.

I politely thanked her but ultimately decided to take out my own trash. However, it left me with so many questions about her, and even about myself!

Does she offer to take everyone’s garbage, or did I somehow catch her eye? Was she in an unusually good mood, or perhaps feeling down and trying to lift her spirits by helping others? Should I have offered to take her garbage in return out of courtesy?

I like to think I’m a considerate person and try to treat others how I would like to be treated. But this neighbor has set a new standard for thoughtfulness towards those around you!
